Tremor, gusty winds temporarily cut off Transco power lines

Tacloban City (March 6) -- The 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit the Region in the evening of Monday, March 3, 2008, toppled down the 69 KV woodpole located at Barangay Macagtas in Catarman, Northern Samar and placed the entire Northern Samar in total darkness.

This was disclosed by the state-owned National Transmission Corporation though its Information Officer Edna Legaspina who informed that the toppled tower was erected and power was restored in the 24 municipalities under the franchise area of Northern Samar Electric Cooperative, the following day, Tuesday, at about 12:44 in the afternoon.

On the same day, however, power was again interrupted at 4:20 o'clock in the afternoon when due to strong winds and heavy rains a fallen coconut tree hit another 69 KV woodpole.

Furthermore, on the same date, at 11:35 in the evening, the Catbalogan-Calbayog line tripped off due to strong winds and heavy rains. This transmission line supplies electricity to Calbayog City and nine municipalities under the franchise area of Samar I Electric Cooperative (SAMELCO I).

Power in Calbayog City and the nine other towns in Samar province was restored on Wednesday, March 5, at 1:22 in the afternoon.

At 4:44 in the afternoon of March 5, power in Catarman and several municipalities in Northern Samar was restored. Supply of electricity in the entire Northern Samar province was back to normal at 5:12 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, today, March 6, the Ormoc-Baybay-Hilongos 69KV line in the Leyte province, tripped off at 10:26 in the morning but power was immediately restored one minute after.

TRANCO reported that affected by the momentary fault were the municipalities under the Leyte V Electric Cooperative (LEYECO V) - Talisayan, Leyte IV Electric Cooperative (LEYECO IV) and three big industries in Baybay City, the Visayan Oil Mill, Incorporated (VOMI), the Specialty Pulp Manufacturing, Incorporated (SPMI), and the SC Global Coco Products, Incorporated.

TRANSCO assured that all transmission lines both in Leyte and Samar are now in normal condition. (PIA 8)
